The ACT is Changing

The ACT has changed—and unprepared students are paying the price. The shift to computer-based testing has led to technical glitches and even canceled exams, colleges are raising score expectations with the updated format, and while the Science section is now optional, skipping it could still put students at a disadvantage. Now more than ever, the way you prepare determines your success.

At HighPrep, we’ve already adapted. HighPrep Academy, our six-week course, and one-on-one tutoring sessions are all updated to reflect the new format. Our tutors don’t just review content—they train students to navigate the changes with confidence, adjust their pacing, and use new strategies designed for today’s ACT.

When the ACT evolves, so do we. HighPrep students aren’t caught off guard—they’re ready to perform.

What changed on the ACT?

The ACT has introduced key updates that give students more time per question across the core sections, while also making the Science section optional. Testing centers continue to offer both paper and computer-based formats, so students can choose the option that works best for them.

Should I take the science section?

With the new ACT format, the Science section is now optional—but we strongly encourage every student to take it. Many colleges still recommend or even require it, especially for STEM pathways, and skipping it could limit your options. Taking the Science section ensures you stay competitive and keep all doors open for admission.

Should I take the writing section?

The ACT Writing section is optional, but some colleges still recommend or require it. Taking it at least once ensures you’re covered for schools that consider writing in their admissions process.

How does this affect me?

It means you’ll face new testing formats, higher score expectations, and tricky choices like whether to take the Science section—so preparation matters more than ever.

How is HighPrep responding?

All of our lessons, practice materials, and strategies have been updated to match the new ACT format. Our tutors teach proven methods to adapt to pacing changes, and we guide students in choosing the right test version—paper or computer—so they avoid unnecessary risks.

What’s the bottom line?

The ACT is changing—but with the right preparation, it doesn’t have to hurt your score. At HighPrep, we make sure students know exactly what to expect and how to stay ahead.
