ACT Frequently Asked Questions

What is the ACT?

The ACT is a standardized test used for college admissions in the United States. It measures skills in English, Math, Reading, with an optional Science and Writing section.

When should I take the ACT?

Students should plan to take the ACT no later than the summer after their sophomore year and continue testing as much as possible through junior and senior year. The more opportunities you give yourself, the better your chances of reaching the score you need for scholarships and admissions.

What’s a good ACT score?

A “good” score depends on your college goals. The national average is about a 20, while competitive schools often look for scores in the high 20s and 30s.

How do colleges use ACT scores?

ACT scores are a major factor in college admissions and can strongly influence your chances of acceptance. Higher scores make you more competitive at selective schools and can also unlock significant merit scholarships. Many colleges use ACT cutoffs to award automatic aid, meaning even a few extra points could save thousands of dollars in tuition.

Should I take the science section?

With the new ACT format, the Science section is now optional—but we strongly encourage every student to take it. Many colleges still recommend or even require it, especially for STEM pathways, and skipping it could limit your options. Taking the Science section ensures you stay competitive and keep all doors open for admission.

Should I take the writing section?

The ACT Writing section is optional, but some colleges still recommend or require it. Taking it at least once ensures you’re covered for schools that consider writing in their admissions process.

HighPrep ACT Services Questions

What is HighPrep Academy?

HighPrep Academy is our self-paced online program. It includes on-demand lessons, practice questions, and step-by-step modules, so students can work anytime, anywhere. It’s available year-round and can be started at any time.

What’s included in the Six-Week ACT Course?

Our live six-week course covers all four sections of the ACT with weekly sessions led by expert instructors. Students learn strategies for pacing, time management, and problem-solving while working through practice questions and reviews.

Can I do both HighPrep Academy and the Six-Week Course?

Yes! In fact, many students start with HighPrep Academy to build their foundation and then move into the Six-Week Course for structure and guided practice. The two programs are designed to complement each other.

How does One-on-One Tutoring work?

One-on-one tutoring pairs students directly with an ACT expert for individualized support. Sessions are tailored to each student’s needs and goals, focusing on areas where they need the most improvement.

Are One-on-One Tutoring spots always available?

Spots are limited due to the personalized nature of tutoring. We recommend students complete HighPrep Academy or our Six-Week Course first to build a foundation, then apply for one-on-one tutoring as a next step.

Which option is best for me?

At HighPrep, your test prep starts where you are. HighPrep Academy is designed for students who need to build a strong foundation in core skills and strategies. The Six-Week Course is ideal for students who are ready for structured practice, accountability, and score-focused preparation. From either starting point, One-on-One Tutoring can take you to the highest level with fully personalized guidance.
